Sacred Waters at the Edge of the Land

At the very northern tip of the Jaffna peninsula, where the land gives way to the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean, lies one of Tamil Eelam’s most extraordinary natural wonders. The Keerimalai Springs are a cluster of natural freshwater pools that emerge from underground sources just metres from the crashing sea — a phenomenon that has inspired reverence and wonder among the Tamil people for millennia.

What to See

The springs consist of two main bathing pools — one for men and one for women — built in traditional stone and fed by natural underground freshwater sources. What makes the site so remarkable is its location: the pools sit directly adjacent to the ocean, separated only by a low sea wall. The contrast between the cool, clear freshwater of the springs and the salt spray of the Indian Ocean just beyond is extraordinary. Beside the springs stands the ancient Naguleswaram Sivan Kovil, one of the five principal Shiva temples (Pancha Ishwarams) of the region. This temple, with its weathered stone and sacred atmosphere, is intimately connected to the springs and adds immense spiritual depth to the visit. The surrounding coastline is dramatically beautiful, with dark rocks meeting the churning sea.

What Makes It Special

According to Tamil tradition, the waters of Keerimalai possess remarkable healing properties. The name “Keerimalai” itself derives from the legend of a sage with a mongoose face (keeri) who was cured of his affliction by bathing in these springs. For centuries, devotees have travelled here to bathe in the mineral-rich waters, believing they can cure skin ailments and other conditions. Whether or not one believes in the curative powers, the experience of bathing in cool, fresh spring water while hearing the roar of the ocean just beyond the wall is utterly unique. The spiritual connection between the springs and the adjacent Naguleswaram Kovil — one of the most ancient Shiva temples in the Tamil lands — gives Keerimalai a sacred quality that transcends ordinary tourism.

Visitor Tips

Bathing is permitted and encouraged — bring appropriate swimwear or a change of clothes. Separate pools for men and women ensure modesty and comfort. The springs can become crowded on weekends and puja days, so weekday mornings offer the most peaceful experience. Visit the Naguleswaram temple before or after your bathe. Be mindful of the rocky coastline nearby and do not swim in the open sea, as currents can be treacherous.
